the Cross

dore-the-descent-from-the-cross2Books are an important part of the Christian life. Next to the study of Scripture (which no healthy Christian can do without!), the reading of books, essays, and articles that are designed to aid in our Christian growth is indispensable. I’ve also included reading material that is pleasurable, too.

Why did Jesus die? Scroll down, past the books and other items, for a list of reasons. The list of reasons will grow as the page is built.

THE CROSS-–Books

Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Died by John Piper

cross-book-piperPiper explains 50 reasons for the death of Jesus. There are more, he tells us, but these reasons are a start. Ligon Duncan places this book at the top of his Top Ten List of popular, devotional books on the atonement. There may be meatier books on the cross out there, but Piper’s book is one of the best introductions to the heart of the gospel, the death of Jesus. Click here for more details. Crossway Books. 128 pages.

In My Places Condemned He Stood by J.I. Packer and Mark Dever

cross-book-dever-packer2The subtitle of this slim volume is striking: Celebrating the Glory of the Atonement. If that doesn’t grab your attention, I don’t know what would. The sacrificial death of Christ…glorious? What could Packer and Dever possibly mean? In less than 200 pages, they explain precisely what they mean—and they do so with clarity and conviction. Tim Keller has this to say about book, ‘the essays in this volume…are some of the most important things I have ever read.’ The list of ringing endorsements is impressive. But the praise of human beings isn’t the reason I’ve included this book here. It’s here because Packer explains why God sent his Son to the cross in a deeply moving way. Packer leaves no loose ends as he examines the atonement. Those who read these essays will find their faith enriched. Crossway Books. 192 pages.
