Rev. Robert Widdowson with daughter, Charlotte

I began ministering at Port Elgin United Church in May, 2007.

Favourite movies include almost anything that Alfred Hitchcock directed (especially his work in the 1950s), the westerns and the epics directed by Anthony Mann (especially the westerns starring Jimmy Stewart), and the early sci-fi movies of James Cameron.  One of my best-loved films is Ivanhoe with Robert Taylor in the starring role. It’s a perfect example of the terrific stuff that Hollywood was able to produce in its heyday. Moreover, it expresses a spirit of honour and heroism that our times have forgotten.

Other favourite directors include Budd Boetticher (The Bullfighter and the Lady is really cool), Howard Hawks (Rio Bravo is nearly perfect), Billy Wilder (although he has a very whacky perspective on how men and women relate), and Val Lewton (some of the stuff he did for RKO are minor masterpieces). Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V and Hamlet are great. Zulu and The Patriot are lots of fun.

More recent movies that are favourites include the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Trade, and Marigold.

Favourite TV series include, at the very top, the Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett in the lead role and Edward Hardwicke as Dr. Watson, which Granada Television produced. Also, I enjoy Have Gun will Travel, starring Richard Boone; and Fawlty Towers with John Cleese who plays Basil Fawlty, the weirdest hotel dude on the small screen.

Favourite Movie Music Composers begins with Miklos Rozsa, Bernard Herrmann, and Ennio Morricone who are by far the best of any movie composers living or dead. James Horner, Danny Elfman, and Brad Fiedel are a few who are also outstanding.

Favourite Books  include The Karamazov Brothers by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Although some still think of me as the Associate, I was hired as the second minister.
